Microneedling and Radiofrequency (RF) Energy

Secret Pro’s microneedling + RF handpiece features tiny, sterile needles that penetrate the skin at depths between 0.5 to 3.5 mm. Depending on the area of skin and the problem area, needles of varying lengths are applied to the skin. The resulting controlled micro injuries signal the production of more fibroblasts in the skin cells that produce connective proteins collagen and elastin. Collagen supports skin rigidity and structure, and elastin provides skin “snap” and stretchiness. Another substance called hyaluronic acid (HA) is also produced during this process; HA is primarily responsible for maintaining skin hydration.

Microneedling devices are also capable of breaking down scar tissue. Within a scar, the collagen fibers are arranged parallel to each other, while in healthy skin, the connective fibers are gathered in a lattice-type formation. The needles themselves mechanically change their arrangement and even stimulate a process called angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels. Over time, treatment can stimulate the natural healing processes required to restore healthy texture and tone.⁽¹⁾  

What is RF?

Radiofrequency is a type of electromagnetic energy that converts to thermal energy when it hits the skin. For the Secret Pro device, your specialist uses needles that deliver RF energy  through each microneedle (non-insulated) or through the tips (semi-insulated). With this thermal heat delivery to the targeted area, existing collagen fibers contract and contribute to the skin-tightening effect. 

About CO₂ Lasers 

Within a CO₂ laser, an electric current runs through a tube with carbon dioxide to produce light energy at a specific wavelength. These beams of light target the water molecules in the skin, causing micro injuries. The Secret Pro laser, in particular, has a fractional ablative laser, meaning that it strategically vaporizes the epidermis in tiny, pixelated sections. 

Unlike a fully ablative device, fractional lasers result in much less downtime for the patient. Fractionated CO₂ lasers are also suitable and effective for all skin types. ⁽²⁾ The device is also capable of emitting fully ablative laser light that requires more downtime but has faster results with fewer treatment sessions.

Procedure Steps 

There are four Secret Pro modalities.

Refine

When a laser specialist only uses the microneedling aspect of the device, it is known as the Refine treatment option.  Prior to applying the needles to your skin, they will cleanse the treatment area and apply a topical numbing cream. Once the cream takes full effect, they will adjust the microneedling handpiece to accommodate your skin’s thickness. Your specialist will utilize either 25 or 64 needles on the device’s stamp, depending on how much surface area needs to be treated. Once they apply the device’s “window” directly onto your skin, it will gently press the needles superficially into the dermis. Your specialist will make at least two passes for each area treated. The procedure is relatively comfortable due to the numbing cream, but you will likely feel some warmth from the needles. After the numbing cream takes effect, Refine takes about 20 minutes to complete. 

Before continuing with the laser portion of the procedure, your specialist may cleanse your face of any small traces of blood and apply more topical numbing cream or a local anesthetic. Then, they will give you eyewear to protect you from the laser light. They will apply one of three types of laser treatment settings. 

Ultra-Light 

With the Ultra-Light option, your laser specialist will place the 20 x 20 mm window of the laser handpiece to the skin and administer pulses of fractionated laser light. This particular option treats sun damage, uneven texture, and more superficial scars. The tiny spaces in between each area targeted by the laser remain unaffected and can help the surrounding skin heal faster. 

Ultra 

The Ultra treatment is more comprehensive and utilizes a more intense, fully ablative laser. This option treats deeper scars and more pronounced signs of aging. The laser light is not dispersed in a pixelated fashion, but it fully vaporizes the epidermis. 

Revive 

The Revive treatment option is used to describe the combination of microneedling + RF and one of the two CO₂ treatments. 

Many patients state that the laser feels similar to a rubber band snapping against their skin, but the discomfort is greatly reduced with a topical anesthetic. After your procedure, your skincare specialist will apply an ointment to protect the skin and promote optimal healing. 

Recovery and Results

At the end of the Secret Pro laser’s combination procedure, your skin will likely be sensitive, red, and swollen. If you have darker skin, it may appear hyperpigmented. This is completely normal and the beginning of the skin’s rejuvenation. You will experience scabbing and itchiness throughout the treatment area as your body works to repair the damage. One of our doctors may prescribe medications to help you handle discomfort, or you may opt to take over-the-counter medications. 

It is critical that you continue to avoid blood-thinning medications, like aspirin, that can cause bleeding and contribute to bruising. Your specialist will also require that you apply a topical steroid to help relieve swelling. You should closely follow the advice and adhere to their instructions regarding daily moisturizing. 

To relieve further swelling, you may use ice packs for a few minutes at a time for the first few days. After a few days, depending on your skin’s sensitivity, your skin will gradually begin to restore its original tone and texture. Though it will take several weeks for it to fully heal, you can ask your specialist when you can safely apply makeup to conceal the pigmentation. 

You’ll continue to see improvements in your radiant new skin, and your full results will be noticeable after a few months. The results of the Secret Pro laser can last years, but only if  you take care of your skin.
